Being a student-athlete is a unique challenge that requires dedication to both academics and athletics. For athletes, especially those involved in demanding sports like ice hockey, boxing, or golf, managing the pressures of schoolwork while performing at a high level on the field or in the ring can be overwhelming. However, with the right strategies, balancing these two worlds is possible.
Jordan Phillips, a high school senior and goalie for the Dallas Ice Warriors, knows the difficulties firsthand. “I start my day early. I get up at 5 a.m. for training, then head straight to school,” he says. “The biggest challenge is finding time to study, especially when there’s a big game coming up. But I’ve learned that planning ahead is the key.”
Jordan’s schedule is tightly packed, and his success in both areas relies on his ability to prioritize tasks. To balance practice with homework, he relies on a time-blocking system. By dividing his day into specific time slots for different tasks, Jordan can ensure he makes time for everything. “I use weekends to catch up on schoolwork or review tactics for upcoming games,” he explains.
Jordan’s story is not unique. Many student-athletes struggle to juggle their sports responsibilities with the demands of schoolwork. Coaches and teachers play crucial roles in helping students manage this balance by offering support, providing flexibility with deadlines, and even allowing for extra study time when necessary.The pressure to perform in both arenas can be intense, but Jordan believes that it’s all about time management and support. “It’s hard, but I wouldn’t change it for anything. I’m learning skills that will help me in life beyond high school,” he reflects.
