Schools have a unique opportunity to help student-athletes thrive academically while still excelling in their respective sports. At Lancaster High School in Texas, coaches and educators work closely together to create an environment where student-athletes can succeed both on and off the field.
Coach Mike Thompson, who coaches the school’s golf team, is a strong advocate for academic support. “We know that academics come first. If our players are struggling in class, they know that they can come to me or any of the other coaches for help,” Coach Thompson says.
Lancaster High has implemented a tutoring system where student-athletes can receive extra academic help after practice or on weekends. This ensures that they’re staying up to date with their studies and not falling behind due to their busy athletic schedules.
For many student-athletes, this support system is crucial. Ella Sanchez, a sophomore and golf team captain, says, “It’s tough balancing everything, but having a tutor available after practice makes a huge difference. It allows me to focus on my game without worrying about missing out on my studies.”
The school also emphasizes time management skills and offers workshops where student-athletes can learn how to balance both areas of their lives effectively. “Our goal is to produce well-rounded athletes who are not only skilled in their sports but also excel academically and have a future beyond high school,” says Principal Elizabeth Cruz.
