When you watch a boxing match, you often see the fighters in the ring, but what you don’t see is the pivotal role of the trainer in the fighter’s journey. Coach Derrick Hayes, a seasoned boxing trainer, has spent over 20 years preparing fighters for major tournaments, including the Texas Golden Gloves. He is the brain behind the success of Marcus Taylor, the 19-year-old champion from Houston.
Coach Derrick’s days are long and demanding, as he balances training schedules, strategy development, and mental preparation for his athletes. “It’s not just about teaching them how to throw a punch; it’s about teaching them discipline, mental strength, and strategy,” Coach Derrick explains. He begins his day by reviewing fight footage, analyzing opponents, and preparing customized training routines for each fighter.
During a fight, Coach Derrick is in the corner, providing encouragement, adjustments, and advice between rounds. “I can see things that the fighter can’t, and my job is to make sure they stay focused and stick to the plan,” he says.
The emotional bond between a trainer and fighter is often deeply personal. Coach Derrick has built trust and respect with Marcus over the years, pushing him to dig deep in moments of exhaustion. “It’s not just about winning. It’s about pushing yourself beyond what you thought was possible,” he says. After a successful victory, Coach Derrick feels an immense sense of pride, knowing that his guidance helped his fighter achieve greatness.
