In a state where football reigns supreme, Tyler Johnson is making ice hockey the sport to watch in Houston. The 17-year-old defenseman is a rising star on the rink, known for his aggressive style and leadership qualities. Tyler’s journey began at a local ice skating rink when he was just six years old. “I fell in love with the speed and intensity of hockey,” he recalls.
Tyler’s breakout moment came during the Lone Star Invitational, where his game-winning goal in double overtime secured a championship for his team. His coach, Martin Raines, describes him as “a player with incredible instincts and the heart of a leader.”
Off the ice, Tyler is a passionate advocate for expanding hockey’s reach in Texas. He launched a program called “Hockey for All,” which introduces the sport to children from underserved communities. His initiative has provided free equipment and training to over 100 kids, many of whom had never seen ice before. “Hockey taught me resilience and teamwork. I want to give other kids that same opportunity,” Tyler says.With dreams of playing in the NHL, Tyler is focused on honing his skills and inspiring the next generation of Texas hockey players. “This isn’t just about my journey—it’s about growing the game for everyone,” he says.
